FAPESP Characterization, Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Biodiversity of the State of São Paulo (BIOTA) carries out an inventory and a characterization of local biodiversity and sets up mechanisms for its preservation and sustainable use. The projects are developed under the responsibility of a Principal Investigator, associated with higher education or research institutions in the State of São Paulo. The selection is through a peer-reviewing system.

  • The role of habitat selection in the maintenance of species integrity in natural hybrid zones, AP.BTA.R

The role of habitat selection in the maintenanc...

Studies on natural hybrid zones are essential for understanding the process of speciation. The gradual accumulation of reproductive incompatibilities tends to intensify the differences between closely related lineages, and multiple barriers can act in concert keeping the integrity of close related species. There are cases where the cohesion of species is maintained even in the presence ...

  • Phytochemistry study and evaluation of the schistosomicidal, cytotoxicity and leishmanicidal activities from Cerrado plants, AP.BTA.R

Phytochemistry study and evaluation of the schi...

This project intends to continue the bioassay-guide chemistry study of plant species that occur in areas of São Paulo State Cerrado, but with potential use as leishmanicidal, schistosomicidal, and cytotoxic. This study began in 2009 with the regular grant project entitled "Phytochemical study and evaluation of mutagenicity, antimutagenicity and cyclooxygenase inhibitory activity of Styr...

  • Shading impacts by coastal infrastructure on biological communities from subtropical rocky shores, PUB.ART

Shading impacts by coastal infrastructure on bi...

    1. Artificial shading has been highlighted as an important human disturbance, affecting both productivity and community organisation. However, studies of shading have been poorly explored from an environmental impact perspective.2. We compared community structure on subtropical rocky shores in areas shaded by human constructions with those in unshaded areas. We then implemented a manipu...

Petroleum is a composite product which, in addition to being very important economically, also stands out for its potential polluter, through contamination of soil and water, being a challenge for environmental sanitation. An alternative for the removal of these compounds is bioremediation, which consists of biotransforming them into less toxic compounds and in some cases without toxici...

  • Analysis of nitrogen content in antropic influenced areas in Amazon and Atlantic Forest using a metabolomic tools, BP.PD

Analysis of nitrogen content in antropic influe...

Biological diversity degradation due to anthropic effects in Brazilian tropical forests (Amazon and Atlantic Forest) is a historical issue and affects important ecological services for well-being human. The limited comprehension of its functioning and ability to promote ecological services makes the human-modified areas in tropical forests central points to researches related to biologi...

South American Monsoon System is the main responsible by the rainfall over Brazil. However, a strong special variability on the precipitation occur in this region, with the opposite trend of precipitation between Nordeste and western Amazon. This rainfall contrast is very important for biogeographic and biodiversity studies in South America. Thus, for the better knowledge about the pre...
