Abstract

The archaeological research at the railway worker village of Paranapiacaba (municipal district of Santo André, São Paulo State) studies the consequences of the working system change, which was impelled by the construction of the British "The São Paulo Railway Co. Ltd." in the last quarter of the 19th century. The research focus was the behavior shift of a particular segment of the Brazilian working class during the transition period from the slavery to the hire system. So far, the project had as research object the residences of the railway village built since 1865, to lodge the employees of the company, Brazilians and immigrants. The archaeological surveys in the residential discard areas identified different characteristics. Such results brought into the discussion about the behavior among the social classes between the final slavocrat period and the beginning of the 20th century. (AU)
