Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering - Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria (1978), master's and doctorate in Electrical Engineering from UNICAMP in 1990 and 1993, respectively. He conducts research in the area of #8203;#8203;Electrical Engineering, with an emphasis on optimization of the operation and planning of electrical power systems such as planning of transmission systems, optimization of distribution systems, linear and nonlinear programming, integer programming, among others. He also researches the theory and application of metaheuristics. As of March 2025, he has 102 articles published in international journals indexed by WoS (53 in IEEE, 19 in IET, 11 in IJEPES, 8 in EPSR and 11 in others). He also has 6616 citations by Web of Science and an impact factor H equal to 48. This impact factor ranks Professor Rubén among the top 5 in Brazil considering as a comparison universe the Electrical Engineering researchers classified as level 1 by CNPq. Professor Rubén also appears among the most influential scientists in the world in the annual ranking carried out by Stanford University.
