Abstract

Previous researches discussed criteria for the identification and protection of the cultural heritage in the small and medium sized cities of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC), where the relations of identity and belonging are not kept inside the municipal borders anymore, highlighting the occurrence of a network of social relations, linked narrowly with the specialization/concentration of activities in the territory (scattered urbanization). It was also possible recognize a similarity in the processes of physical constitution of the territories of the MRC, of the social fabric and the current dynamic of the cities (dismembering, dislocations) that intertwine in a complex and diachronic way a variety of cultural references (material and immaterial). The regular occurrence of festivities and festivals of great regional impact reinforces the repetition of processes in the shaping of "memory places" or "active stages" where they take place. The present research aims at making a deeper discussion about these references, places and landscapes. It assumes the acknowledgement of the singularity on the metropolitan territory of the MRC given by 7 vectors of growth and expansion, as the context in which the ways of life of the populations of several municipalities converge, generating specific spatial conformations, beyond the original urban fabrics. Generically called peripheries, in a more detailed analysis, they reveal their own distinct contours: the peri-urban and the suburban, where new and traditional social practices intertwine, which imply relationships of identity and belonging and consequently the identification and valuing of the cultural remains. It is intended to be an advance regarding the previous research in that it aims at revealing nuances of the ways of living and everyday coexistence of different populations from an inverted point of view of the transformations of the territories in the metropolitan scope of Campinas.
