Abstract

The proposed project explores a botanical, Harpagophytum procumbens subsp. procumbens (Burch.) DC. Ex Meisn, family Pedaliaceae (Devil's Claw; Garra do Diabo) for which there is evidence of benefit to human health, namely its use in management of inflammatory arthritis, lower back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. H. procumbens is one of the most frequently used herbal products for these conditions in Europe, and also is widely used in Africa, the United States and Brazil (and other countries). Recent studies support its potential utility, however the variability in the products being marketed and lack of well-defined mechanisms and biological targets impede medical acceptance. (AU)
