Development of silver nanoparticles coated with silicon dioxide and their application in experimental dental composites


The aims of this study is 1) to synthesize and characterize silver nanoparticles coated with silicone dioxide, with the purpose of masking the metallic coloration of silver, and 2) to evaluate the effect of these particles in a experimental resin-based materials for the antimicrobial activity, degree of conversion, optical and mechanical properties. Materials and Methods: in the first part of the study silver nanoparticles coated with silicon dioxide will be synthesized and characterized. In the second part of the project, these particles will be incorporated in an organic matrix containing BisGMA and TEGDMA (1:1 in mols) to be evaluated for antimicrobial activity (minimum inhibitory concentration and biofilm formation). The materials showing significant antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans will be tested for degree of conversion (FTIR spectroscopy), optical properties in spectrophotometry (total transmittance and ”E) and mechanical properties (biaxial flexural strength and elastic modulus). In finding homoscedastic results in the second phase, it will be applied the ANOVA followed by Tukey's Test to contrast among means, at a significance level of 5%. (AU)
