Abstract

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPDs) in pediatric patients, such as recurrent wheezing, asthma and cystic fibrosis are associated to higher demand from health system; costs of emergencies consults; medication for crisis; exacerbations and hospital admissions; and worst quality of life for patients and their families. Objective: To assess the inflammatory and functional features, and the risks factors associated to chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases in pediatric patients. Materials and methods: Prospective comparative study with infants, children and adolescents, aged 2 months to 17 years old, diagnosed with COPDs attending to the Outpatient Clinic Center from Clinics Hospital of University of Campinas (Unicamp). Parents and legal guardians will fill out an evaluation form with clinical and family history information. In order to assess cellularity and inflammatory profile, all patients will perform the sputum induction technique and blood draw, which will be used to eosinofil and neutrophil count; interleukine assessment using CBA kits and flow citometry; and vitamin D dosage. To assess the functional characteristic, spirometry and the Six Minute Walk Test will be performed in subjects 7 years and older. The collected data will be stored and analyzed by SPSS 16.0 Windows software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL; EUA) (p=5%). (AU)
