Assessment of anthropogenic heat, greenhouse gases, and air pollutants emission abatement for different scenarios in transportation urban planning

Abstract

Concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere has reached alarming values and the long lifetime of some GHG, combined with the current energy consumption, still heavily fossil-fuel based, demands the implementation of adaptation measures. This is particularly true for Brazilian cities, where 86 % of the country population live, in a context of great environmental vulnerability, since these cities present substantial rates of inequality in urban infrastructure access. In Sao Paulo, the largest megacity in South America, traffic is responsible for the majority of air pollutants and an important part of the GHG emission and for a great part of the anthropogenic heat released to the atmosphere. Several studies show an increasing tendency for extreme precipitation events for Sao Paulo, where anthropogenic heat contributes to urban heat island effect, that in turn may contribute to extreme precipitation. In addition, air pollutants affect population health, increasing its vulnerability. A series of public policies, from national to municipal scopes, has been implemented with guidelines for urban transportation and mobility planning and several technological and policy-related innovative solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation have been developed and discussed. Nevertheless, a clear and quantitative assessment of what impact each alternative would have in anthropogenic heat, air pollutants, and GHG abatement is lacking. The present project aims to discuss the viable technological and policy-related alternatives for urban transportation and mobility planning in Sao Paulo, designing possible scenarios and assessing the potential of each scenario in abating anthropogenic heat, air pollutants and GHG emission.
