Abstract
Nowadays, one of the biggest challenges of urban areas is managing the solid waste produced by many anthropogenic activities, demanding an integrated solution (behavioral, technical and tecnologies), in order to find a safe destination and minimize any environmental impact. Among the daily waste produced by the communities are those resulting from the water treatment to the public supply, with locals specificities, which reflects on the soil usage. In Brazil, the sludge from the water treatment plant is classified as safe solid waste and the jurisdiction responsible for its destination is whomever generated it. Therefore, adding the challenge of producing clean water in quality and quantity to fullfill the demand, the local government and its partnerhips work with the need to provide secure and low cost solutions for managing this waste. In this context, this research project is intended to evaluate the sludge usage from the water treatment plants for the construction of the base and sub-base of road pavements. This evaluation will be preceded from tests of the physicochemical and biological features of the sludge generated in two water treatment plants of São Paulo'state, as well as the identification of the environmental impact of the project. This is an applied research with quantitative and qualitative data evaluated by a multidisciplinary team. Considering the features of the waste and the hindrance faced by the cities to properly manange their waste, it's undeniable that the results of this research will have national repercussion and it will contribute for a better environmental quality of the territories.
