Revision of the nominal species of the ichthyofauna from São Paulo State rivers through topotypes morphological and molecular analysis, including a characterization of the remnant ichthyological diversity in the type localities and their vicinities

Abstract

The fish fauna from rivers of São Paulo State, specially that from the Tietê and Grande rivers, at the upper Paraná River Basin, have historic biological investigations that resulted in a partial knowledge of its diversity. The first species descriptions from ichthyological material obtained in these rivers dated from the first half of XIX century. Since this period, studies on taxonomy, systematic, biology, ecology and, nowadays, on molecular genetics were been realized. Although the existence of great volume of information on the São Paulo Rivers ichthyofauna, there are still much taxonomical problems to be resolved. New studies are required to provide data on molecular genetics, functional anatomy and phylogenetic relationships of the species for the better characterization of ichthyological diversity. The fish collection of the Laboratório de Ictiologia Sistemática do Departamento de Ecologia e Biologia Evolutiva da Universidade Federal de São Carlos (LISDEBE-UFSCar) houses a significant collection of specimens from rivers of the upper Paraná River basin (Grande, Tietê and Paranapanema), small coastal river basins, Paraíba do Sul River and Ribeira de Iguape River in the São Paulo State. The collection enclosures lots of topotype specimens recently collected and with respective tissue bank for molecular analysis. In addition, part of the housed material was collected more than 30 years ago in environments that are actually changed but still ill studied in these basins. This project proposes a wide revision of material housed in fish collections, including the taxonomic revision of the species and group of species which type localities are inserted in rivers of the state. Besides, to the analysis of topotype material already present in the LISDEBE collection and its molecular characterization (DNA barcode), collection and analysis of additional ichthyological material will be performed in other type-localities. The information gathered during the study of this material will allow an appreciation of the diversity and distribution of the species in the drainage. Finally, we intend to characterize the diversity of the ichthyofauna in order to elaborate guidebooks of identification of species for the basins of the Tietê and Grande rivers. (AU)
