Extractive Ethanol Fermentation in Pneumatic Bioreactors with Removal by CO2 Stripping Integrated to Recovery Units

Abstract

The ethanol that accumulates in the broth during the alcoholic fermentation is the main toxic component for yeast, affecting its growth and limiting the industrial ethanol production. In this way, the process is limited to the use of musts with moderate concentrations of fermentable sugars, producing wines with low ethanol concentration (8 to 11ºGL), which requires a large amount of energy for the ethanol recovery by distillation, generating also large volumes of vinasse. One way of minimizing the inhibitory effect is the use of the extractive fermentation, wherein the ethanol is continuously removed from the fermentation broth during the process. The present project proposes to evaluate, experimentally and by simulation, the extractive alcoholic fermentation in pneumatic bioreactors integrated to a stage of ethanol recovery. It will be studied the extraction of the ethanol from the fermentation broth by stripping with CO2 at different temperatures and in three pneumatic bioreactors (bubble column and concentric tube and split airlifts) varying the concentration of substrate in the must, as well as the ethanol recovery from the CO2 stream by absorption. The results will be evaluated in terms of production and productivity in ethanol and will be compared with those obtained in the conventional process without extraction. It is intended to get to the final implementation of the proposal, the protocol of an alternative ethanol production process more productive, which can be the starting point for validation in pilot and industrial scales.
