Abstract

Humans and nonhuman animals are able to estimate time intervals of different durations. Intervals from hundreds of milliseconds to seconds are especially important for sensory, motor, and cognitive processes. Although there are a number of theoretical models to explain how temporal processing takes place on this scale, the mechanisms underlying this processing are still largely unknown. One of the main difficulties in understanding these mechanisms is the lack of an electrophysiological marker of temporal processing in electroencephalography (EEG). However, recent studies using methodologies based on multivariate pattern analyzes (MVPA) have shown the potential of these techniques in decoding the representation of information in our central nervous system (CNS). In the present project, we aim to use MVPA methods to investigate how temporal processing occurs. Through three experiments with concomitant recording of EEG, we will investigate how different tasks, intervals and learning modulate the representation of time. (AU)
