The extreme universe: black holes and the Fermi telescope

Abstract

Black Holes (BH) are key actors in astronomy. They behave as engines that convert the gravitational energy of infalling gas into intense, high-energy radiation, thus powering the most luminous objects in the universe: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and gamma-ray bursts. Furthermore, BHs operate as extreme particle accelerators through ill-understood processes and produce outflows of particles which move close to the speed of light; these powerful outflows can shut down star formation in the host galaxies. This project aims at creating a new research group that will be focused on understanding how matter behaves in the extreme gravity conditions near event horizons and the nature of particle acceleration and high-energy emission from accreting BHs. Our research program will consist of analyzing gamma-rays from AGNs observed with the Fermi Space Telescope. Our group at IAG USP will be the first in the Southern Hemisphere to join the Fermi LAT Collaboration and will lead several analysis efforts of Fermi observations. (AU)
