Abstract

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) acrylic resins are the main material used in the manufacture of dental prostheses, in particular based on total dentures (dentures). PMMA has many advantages, such as easy processing, simple repairs, low cost and aesthetics. Despite the great progress of research since its introduction in the commercial market, some limitations still persist, such as the adhesion of microorganisms and breakage by impact and fatigue. To make this material even more advantageous, many papers are focused on evaluating how the addition of nanoparticles in the PMMA polymer matrix influences the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of this resin. Silver is a metal with excellent microbial properties. There are several works involving the addition of nanoparticles in dental materials. However, these works use spherical particles of silver. The spherical particles must provide an excellent antimicrobial action in the nanocomposites, but their action as mechanical reinforcement is compromised due to the spherical shape of the particles. As far as we know, no work has been done using silver nanowires as a reinforcing agent. Because of their fibrillar character, silver nanowires should significantly increase the mechanical strength of nanocomposites while maintaining their excellent antimicrobial property. The objective of this work is to study the influence of the addition of silver nanowires to PMMA, verifying the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of the nanoparticles, with potential for the application of dental prostheses.
