Biological and economic characteristics of sustainable aquaculture and the carrying capacity of fish farms in Magallanes, Chile and São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract

Currently, there is a growing trend towards sustainable food production, especially in aquatic environments where multiple uses present must be considered, so that water quality is preserved. In this context, all actors involved in the aquaculture activity should jointly define and implement environmentally responsible codes of conduct and practices aimed at optimizing the use of water resources, minimizing the environmental impacts caused by aquaculture. In this context, the knowledge of the carrying capacity of these environments is of fundamental importance 50 that the aquaculture industry can plan the sustainable development of this modality of agribusiness and to consolidate like one of the great world producers of fishes cultivated. In this scenario, Chile and Brazil, the main producers of fish of South America, need research and training of human resources to work with this theme. Therefore, the present proposal addresses the issue of studies and methodologies for analyzing the carrying capacity of aquatic environments for sustainable fish production from the academic point of view, making a comparative analysis of what happens in fish farms in the Magallanes-Chile region and in the São Paulo-Brazil, and based on this diagnosis, it is proposed to propose research guidelines to follow, addressing the realities of both areas, but at the same time emphasizing the positive aspects in which it converges.
