Abstract

The South American Monsoon (SAMS) has a direct impact on the hydrology of the region and is influenced by the variability of surface temperatures in the South Atlantic. This ocean is indeedone of the most important sources of moisture flow that feeds rainfalls in South America. This monsoon flux also depends on the land-sea gradient to establish and evolve. Due to their impacton the net solar radiation at the surface, large eruptions can significantly influence SAMS with potentially devastating consequences on the local economy. Observations indicate a response generally associated with a decrease in surface temperatures and tropical precipitation for several years following a stratospheric eruption. In this context, we wish to better characterizethe response of SAMS to volcanism and the role of the Atlantic Ocean relying on observations and sensitivity experiments with the IPSL models following the methodology developed by Khodri et al(2017).
