Nanoengineering and nanotechnology: advancing current approaches to study and treat biofilms

Abstract

Microorganisms living as biofilms cause several human diseases. Biofilm control and treatment have challenges that need to be overcome. Therefore, understanding these microbial communities and the extracellular matrix that ensures the maintenance of biofilm is paramount for the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies. Recent advances in nanoengineering and nanotechnology can stimulate the development of more guided approaches. Thus, the visit by Dr. Hyun (Michel) Koo (an expert in biofilm research) and the activities that will be performed during his visit and thereof will help to propel successful studies in this research area.
