Abstract

The study of the relationships between science and religion in Brazilian Academy pointed to no existing conscious conflict between science and religion, examined with the concept of life space, and to existing conflicts examined with psychoanalytical insights (Paiva, 1993; 2000). The current project aims at investigating, after twenty years, the current relationships that professors/researchers of the ten highest ranked Brazilian universities do or do not establish between science and religion. This research will be qualiquant, and will be directed to a stratified sample of professors of the three large areas of knowledge, through an online Questionnaire based on previous Brazilian research and on Ecklund´s and Cols. Questionnaire, and will be completed with personal interviews. The general objective is to deep the understanding of the psychological dynamics involved in the academic relationships between science and religion. Specific objectives are to register the psychological implications of religion and science; to quantitatively amplify the data; to update the review of international literature regarding the relationships between science and religion in the Academy; to verify the gradient of academic distance from religion; to compare the position of Brazilian university professors/researchers with their North-American an Italian peers.
