The voice of obese patients before and after bariatric surgery: clinical, videolaryngoscopic, perceptual-auditory and acoustic evaluations.

Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is an important public health problem, and for some authors, excess weight modifies vocal performance due abnormal fat deposition in the abdominal region and in the airways. Vocal symptoms are more frequent in obese and the voice is described as hoarse, breathy and unstable. The values of f0 and the maximum phonation time are also below normative. Excessive and abrupt weight loss resulting from bariatric surgery results in muscle atrophy and sagging. The involvement of the larynx in this process is not well known. Objectives: To analyze the vocal characteristics of obese patients before and after bariatric surgery under clinical, ,videolaryngoscopic, perceptual-auditory and acoustic aspects. Methods: 40 women, aged between 18 and 59 years, who are candidates for bariatric surgery according to WHO criteria (BMI> 40 kg / m2 or greater than 35 kg / m2 with associated diseases) will be submitted to: anamnesis for data collection demographic data, habits and addictions, profession, vocal, respiratory and digestive symptoms, calculation of body mass index (BMI), data collection of QVV (Quality of Life in Voice) and IDV (Vocal Disadvantage Index). Patients will be submitted to auditory perceptual (GRBASI scale) and acoustic analysis (MDVP), calculation of maximum phonation time (MFT), videolaryngoscopy, audiometry and tympanometry. Moments studied: preoperative (M0), six months (M1) and one year after surgery (M2). The results will be presented in graphs and tables and submitted to the statistical analysis (AU)
