Abstract

Geographical barriers greatly influence the genetic isolation of some marine species, but the transposition of these barriers by some fish may occur, so that there is no change in the gene flow of the species. The estuarine environments may be related to the isolation of populations due, among other factors, to the stress of the salinity variation inherent to the estuaries, including for marine catfish, that migrate to these environments during the reproduction phase. Marine catfish constitute an excellent model for the study of evolution and biogeography because different species present different ways of life and their relationship with estuaries, as well as different evolutionary rates. The marine catfish that will be studied belong to the Cathorops and Genidens genus of the Ariidae family, which occur in the Western Atlantic, where they are widely consumed in subsistence fishing. In the present study, we will perform a study on the composition and genetic structure of C. spixii, C. agassizi, G. genidens and G. barbus species. SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), obtained with new generation sequencing (NGS), as a source of information, will be used to test hypotheses about population relations (including isolation) in the species mentioned. This project will contribute to the knowledge of the diversity, conservation and fishery management of the marine catfish ichthyofauna in the Western Atlantic Ocean, will allow the study of the efficiency of the marine barriers to the isolation of these species (which may perhaps be extended to other estuarine species), will allow to test hypotheses on the historical biogeography of the Brazilian coast, and contribute with relevant information for possible conservation actions of the studied species and maybe other with similar way of life.
