Abstract

This project will continue the previous project (FAPESP 2016/22196-2), focusing on chromosome evolution, genetic diversity and phylogeography of Osteoglossiformes species representative of different intercontinental regions, counting on a network of international collaborators equally interested in this promising approach. New generation sequencing of Ultra-Preserved Elements (EUCs) and DArT-Seq (Diversity Array Technology Sequencing) markers will be used in a broad sampling of representatives of all order families. It will be aimed to infer about the diversification of related species, present in different continents, in view of their fragmentation process and the occurrence of marine dispersions of ancestors currently extinct. In this context, the arowana (Osteoglossidae) species are particularly noteworthy, since they present totally uncovered investigations, where comparative chromosomal and genomic analyzes will be focused on all species present in South America, Asia and Australia, focusing on the processes of karyotype evolution and reconstruction of biogeographic models that can clarify the current geographic distribution of this group. In addition, the phylogeographic history of one of the most known and representative species of Osteoglossiformes, pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) will be investigated from the development of evolutionary models, which will be tested with recent methodologies of phylogeographic analysis. Allied to this project is an integrated team of 06 research groups, representative of all the 5 continents, adding efforts to the viability and execution of the objectives that are being proposed. The present proposal will provide significant advances in the understanding of chromosomal evolution, organization and genomic diversification and biodiversity of the Osteoglossiformes, one of the most basic orders among fishes and widely distributed across several continents of the old and the new worlds.
