Marine sulfatases and oxidases for the trimming of biogenic and biobased products (BioTrim)

Abstract

The change from petrol- to biobased industry is one of the major challenges of our society, but also a great opportunity for industrial growth and for improving our quality of life. To foster the development of a biobased industry, novel biotechnological processes are needed to generate new biobased products that can be used as materials, food additives, textiles, coatings, among others. One hurdle in the utilization of plant biomass for such applications lies in its heterogeneity, leading to partially less defined products. Important examples here are 1) carrageenan, which comes in rather different state of sulfation and 2) nitrocellulose, which based on the process conditions has sulfate impurities along the polymer chain. In addition, coloration can be problematic and sustainable decolorization methods are important. In BioTrim these challenges are targeted by the development of specific enzymes (i.e. sulfatases and oxidases) that can be applied in the production of tailored ("trimmed") materials and for sustainable processes. Due to their immense genetic and biochemical diversity, marine microorganisms are viewed as a promising source of enzymes within this project. Marine fungi are a valuable but so far underexplored source of enzymes of industrial and/or environmental interest. BioTrim aims at the exploration of this group of organisms to discover novel sulfatases and oxidases for the trimming of biogenic products, such enlarging the field of application, optimize the production or leading to safer products (e.g. carrageenans as technical hydrocolloids, food additives, nitrocellulose as biobased additive to coatings, bioremediation of textile dyes and biobleaching). Fungal strains and screening methods will be exchanged between TUM and UNESP and there will be a close collaboration to characterize enzymes, optimize the production and develop applications. A further goal is a fast progress from laboratory application to practice in industrial scale, because of this, Brazilian and German industry companies will join a dissemination advisory board to bring together research with interested market players.
