Biodiversity in teaching materials and in the young people's conceptions and interests: reflections for the Biota Education

Abstract

The Biota-Fapesp Program has produced knowledge on the characterization, conservation and sustainable use of State of São Paulo biodiversity (Brazil). Despite initiatives already started, one of the challenges of the Program is that its knowledge reaches society through the education. In order to do this, it is necessary to know the interests and conceptions of young people about biodiversity and to reflect about how the theme is treated in teaching materials available to students, seeking to identify the main needs. Thus, the objectives of this research are 1) to investigate how the theme biodiversity is treated in Brazilian teaching materials; and 2) to investigate the interests and conceptions of young people of the São Paulo State about biodiversity. This Regular Project aim to contribute to the Thematic Project: "Biota-FAPESP program in basic education: possibilities for curricular integration" (Process 2016/05843-4), which will elaborate teaching materials considering the interest of young people. The results of this project are expected to serve as a basis for further elaboration of teaching materials on the Thematic Project. To do so, we will analyze the approach of the theme biodiversity in teaching materials used by students from 11 to 14 years old in the State of São Paulo, due to the fact that Biota-Fapesp has the biodiversity of this State as its main focus. We will also use questionnaires and interviews to collect data with students from ten schools of the same State. Considering that São Paulo covers two biomes, Cerrado and Atlantic forest, the sample will involve schools located in their vicinity and coastal schools. (AU)
