Monitoring of the aphid fauna in Brassica spp. and its interaction in the dispersion of viruses in intensive cropping in the State of São Paulo

Abstract

The State of São Paulo is the most important brassica producer in Brazil and also stands out as the largest grower of many economically important varieties. The intensive cropping in growing areas led to increasing of diseases, especially viruses which may cause crop losses affecting production costs. In Brazil, most virus species described on brassicae are aphid-borne viruses becoming more noticeable Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV, Potyvirus), Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV, Caulimovirus) and Cole latent virus (CoLV, Carlavirus). Although occupying about 50% of cropland in the State of São Paulo destined to leafy olericultural plants, little is known about the epidemiological aspects of the interactions between aphids and dispersal of TuMV, CaMV and CoLV on cultivated brassicae. Such approaches are important not only for understanding of the viral diseases but also for their control to prevent losses. Therefore, this proposal aims to disclose the present panorama of the incidence of the aphid-borne viruses (TuMV, CaMV and CoLV) which were reported on brassicae in the State of São Paulo and their interaction with the aphid fauna in the intensive cropping. The results will be obtained through the association of the monitoring and identification of aphid fauna present in the field, using yellow sticky traps and and yellow water-pan traps (Moericke), with the serological and molecular detection of the viruses in plants and aphids. According to the results, a calendar will be proposed to assist in the management strategies of the brassica culture for the green belt of São Paulo, since there are no effective resistance genes for the strains reported in brassicas.
