Abstract

This project aims to continue the study (JP1) of the factors responsible for the variability of pig performance and thus establish nutritional programs based on the concept of precision nutrition. In the actual context of global warming and livestock production increase in hot climate countries areas, livestock animals will be more and more exposed to heat stress. In addition, the association of global warming, higher animal stock density in smaller areas, increased flow of animals in the production systems and different management practices adopted (sanitary housing conditions) will benefit the development and dissemination of pathogens resulting in a greater contamination pressure. In this regard, the challenges of the livestock production sector in the 21st century include meeting the growing global demand for food in a context in which livestock animals will be more and more exposed to heat stress and sanitary challenges. Therefore, the objectives of this project are: a/ to evaluate the effect of different sanitary housing conditions on the on the physiology, metabolism, health status and performance of post weaning piglets; b/ to evaluate the interaction effects of nutritional strategy, health status, sanitary housing conditions and ambient temperature on the physiology, metabolism and performance of growing-finishing pigs; c/ to develop a method to monitor the health status of pigs in real time. For that purpose, the project is divided into 4 phases. In Phase 1, a survey of the management practices adopted during the post-weaning and growing-finishing phases in Brazilian pig farms will be conducted. In Phase 2, a systematic study (meta-analyses) will be performed to identify and quantify the optimal amino acids levels to be used in the diets according to the different challenges which pigs can be exposed during the growing-finishing phases (sanitary conditions and ambient temperature). In Phase 3 a study will be conduct to evaluate the effect of different sanitary housing conditions on the on the physiology, metabolism, health status and performance of post weaning piglets. In this phase, five others studies will be conduct to evaluate the effects of nutritional strategies (amino acids), health status (pigs from weaning phase raised on different sanitary housing conditions), sanitary housing conditions and temperature on growing-finishing pigs on physiology, metabolism and performance. In Phase 4, based on the results of Phase 3, will be evaluated the effects of nutritional strategies, health status, sanitary housing conditions and ambient temperature on feeding behavior responses of growing-finishing pigs. Finally, a dynamic linear model developed to identify deviations in real time from the normal pattern of pig feed consumption exposed to challenges will be validated in this project. The project's results may be used as a technological and nutritional strategy for pigs exposed to sanitary challenges in hot climates. Thus, this initiative would contribute to the sustainable development of pig farming in tropical and subtropical climates and to adapting production systems to the challenges imposed by intensified production and global warming.
