Poverty, economic development and human capital in the Brazilian Regions

Abstract

In the present project, the primary goal is to examine the effects of poverty on the level of development and productivity of the Brazilian states and municipalities. Three studies will be carried out. The first will employ a dataset for the Brazilian States, while in the second the database is for the Brazilian municipalities, with the use of the spatial econometric method to consider the spatial effect in the empirical analysis. In the third article, we will investigate the relationship between poverty incidence and human capital in the Brazilian States. Many studies evaluate the relevance of growth and economic development in poverty reduction, but almost no one assesses the inverse relationship, i.e., the impacts of poverty on economic development.
