Karyotype and sex chromosome evolution in Neotropical fishes. Part III.

Abstract

The Neotropical freshwater fish fauna is one of the most speciose in the world, in addition to several species to be described yet. In this way, such enormous diversity constitutes a challenge for scientific knowledge, offering many fundamental evolutionary questions to be solved. In this scenario, the fish cytogenetics has provided important advances by using both classical and molecular procedures. In turn, some fish families have been found as useful investigative models, enabling advances concerning our real biodiversity, evolutionary processes, and interrelationships. Some of them have been studied by our research group for years, and new and important data in relation to cryptic species complexes and the differentiation of sex chromosomes in lower vertebrates were found. In this context, the present proposal has in mind to give continuity to the former projects (FAPESP- 2014/22532-7 e FAPESP- 2016/21411-7), focusing now in some fish groups not deeply studied yet, but also promising for evolutionary studies such as the Lebiasinidae and Ctenolucidae families, emphasizing on specific genomic markers using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), chromosomal microdissection, whole chromosome painting (WCP) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). Such procedures will be directed to itemized analyses of the karyotype organization of species from these two fish families, their probable relationships and the differentiation process of the sex chromosomes that they harbor. Partnerships with Brazilian and European researcher groups will be strengthened, as well as the scientific training of undergraduate, master, doctoral and post-doctoral students. Resolute advances in respect to the characterization of the biodiversity and relationships among our fish species are expected, on the basis of the proposals that are being presented and the robust partnerships that we have adopted and maintained in the last years in our research group.
