Abstract

Oral cancer is undoubtedly one of the major public health problems in Brazil, and despite advances in prevention and diagnosis procedures, little improvement in epidemiological indicators has been detected over time. Thus the discussion of public policies with risk factor elimination/reduction strategies and case tracking seems to be promising, and will be addressed at this event, with emphasis on the discussion of: Transforming action on the local and regional reality of cancer epidemiology oral; proposals for integrating teaching, assistance and research in oral cancer prevention; and health surveillance strategies in primary and secondary care for oral cancer prevention. Visiting researcher, Dr. Alessandro Villa, guest of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, will initially deliver a lecture titled Oral leukoplakia: a challenging condition in the Postgraduate Program in Oral Diagnosis - FOUSP, in São Paulo. In Ribeirão Preto, will participate in an event at the FORP-USP (5th Meeting of Stomatology of USP) where the following topics will be addressed: Transforming action of research on the regional reality of oral cancer epidemiology; Proposals for teaching and research integration at USP for the prevention of oral cancer; and Health surveillance strategies in primary and secondary care for oral cancer prevention. In addition to the lecture Oral leukoplakia: a challenging condition, which will also be given to the public of the event at FORP-USP, the visiting researcher will give the lecture Oral cancer screening and the role of the oral health provider. Dr. Villa will visit the Clinical Hospital of Ribeirão Preto and will discuss the preliminary results of the research projects: Clinical, histopathological and immunophenotypic characterization of oral leukoplakia; Association of High Risk HPVs and Candida spp with Malignant Transformation of Oral Dysplasia; and Expression of laminin-5 in oral lichen planus and oral lichenoid lesions: perspective of application as malignant transformation markers.
