Abstract

In terms of the proposed collaborative research and educational activities the applicants plan to initiate a long term collaboration, particular involving young scientists and PhD students, in distinct research topics covering drug discovery, drug design and drug delivery. The complementary expertise of the applicants and Institutions involved will be first focused and merged to identify and optimize drug compounds, including drug delivery methods to target selected infectious diseases which are already investigated within local research activities at UHH and USP. The research initiative will utilize latest biophysical and bioanalytical methods and technologies established at UHH and USP and at the research Campus DESY, Hamburg, allowing them to obtain unique data and results in the field of drug discovery. The pilot investigations will focus on the vitamin B6 metabolism of parasites and bacteria, an innovative drug target system. The research collaboration will publish results in time, allowing to set up and to prepare an extended research proposal, including more faculties and departments at UHH and USP, as bioinformatics, chemistry, biology and medicine, to be submitted to appropriate funding agencies, to obtain support for a medium to long term collaboration.
