The municipal employees and the construction of social identity in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1925-1945

Abstract

The book "Urban Space and National Identity in Early Twentieth Century São Paulo, Brazil Crafting Modernity", published by Cristina Mehrtens at the beginning of this decade, has been an important reference in "paulistanistas" studies developed abroad and in the city of São Paulo itself. Written by the architect, urbanist, anthropologist and doctor in history, Cristina Mehrtens, as a result of her doctoral thesis, the book shows the conformation of a medium sector in the city of São Paulo, through institutions oriented to city planning, such as Municipal Public Works Department of PMSP and Cia City. The arrival of Mehrtens to EFLCH-UNIFESP, is linked to the development of the project "Pauliceia Esférelada: an investigation on the demolition processof spaces in the central area of São Paulo and its media representations, "(Fapesp 2018/15939-4 process), which precisely studies the prefecture of Prestes Maia in the Estado Novo period, which made possible the construction of a highway project of great proportion over the traditional fabric of São Paulo as well as by plantation areas. Thus, the mini-course and the presence of Mehrtens for two months in São Paulo, will help us to deepen our understanding of the municipal discussions that gave ballast and support to the "Avenues Plan for the City of São Paulo." The subject is also of interest to two other UNIFESP PPGs, the Social Sciences, which is based at the EFLCH itself, and the Economics and Development Department, based at the Paulista School of Politics, Economics and Business, at the Osasco campus of UNIFESP.
