Abstract

The research objectives are to enhance quality of 3D-printed tool steel and Inconel, and later to expand the scope to include reliability study and providing research experiences to undergraduate students in both countries.In the first year, both surface and volume defects resulted from 3D printing are eliminated by a series of post printing processes: hot isostatic pressing to close internal pores, grinding then polishing to effectively removal of surface defects while controlling dimensions of a specimen. A defect-free microstructure, micron level tolerance, and submicron surface finish confirm the success of this project. Two reciprocating trips by the co-PIs and their PhD students are carefully planned so that balanced works using complementary and available equipment at both universities are accomplished. The research outcomes will be shared with sponsoring companies, and presented at top international conferences at both countries. Additional funding from NSF and FAPESP will be sought after completion of this first year collaboration. The continuing research will address the long-term reliability of printed components, and provide invaluable research experiences to undergraduate students from both countries. (AU)
