Informal support to child neglect and abuse: a necessary approach to Brazilian context

Abstract

Children and adolescents feature among the main victims of violence. Despite scientific discussions to broaden our understanding regarding child and adolescent abuse and neglect, the literature has mainly focused on those experiencing abuse, rather than considering the wider social context, including perpetrators of violence, and other people who may be part of the picture. To fill one of the gaps in our understanding, it is important to explore the informal support (support provided by friends, family members, neighbours, teachers etc) provided to children and adolescents who are experiencing abuse and neglect, in addition to understanding the impacts on health and well-being, and the subsequent care needs, from the perspectives of these informal supporters. To gain in-depth knowledge about the study of this topic area, Dr. Diene M. Carlos is interested in hosting Dr. Alison Gregory, who has been carrying out research with informal supporters since 2010. Therefore, the aim of this proposal is to improve the scientific knowledge, gain new perspectives for the teaching and training of healthcare professionals, and to establish a dialogue and exchange between British and Brazilian universities and institutions, which will boost the development of knowledge about violence against children and adolescents. The establishment and consolidation of the proposed partnership with the University of Bristol will not only develop the profile and integration of UFSCar in the international scene, but also open new possibilities of interchange for undergraduate and post-graduate students.
