Abstract

The conjugation of a photosensitizer (PS) to a nanoparticle (NP) creates the well-known photosensitizing nanoparticles which have been widely explored for application in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). In comparison with the application of a PS in solution, the use of photosensitizing NPs provides improved tumor targeting and circulation time. Also, photosensitizing NPs can enhance therapeutic efficiency of PS by protecting them from deactivation as well as by avoiding PS aggregation and providing the modulation of PS photoactivity. In addition to these advantages the development of a photosensitizing NP by conjugating the PS to a ternary quantum dot will also enable the application of the NPs as agents for diagnosis by fluorescence.
