Biodiversity in the perspective of students' school performance and in teacher's work: considerations for Biota-Education

Abstract

The Biota-Fapesp Program has already produced knowledge on the characterization, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the State of São Paulo. However, several challenges remain in relation to the Program, especially those that seek to bring their knowledge, of biodiversity, closer to the educational field. For such an approach, it is necessary, among other things, to know the skills and knowledge of young people on biodiversity issues and, at the same time, from this understanding to launch reflections on how the theme is being addressed by teachers in High School. In this context, the objectives of this research are linked to: 1) Analyze the performance of the students of the State of São Paulo in the issues of Biodiversity of National High School Exam; 2) Investigate how biodiversity is treated by teachers in high school. This Regular Research Project aims to contribute to a broader Thematic Project, namely "The Biota-FAPESP program in basic education: possibilities for curricular integration" (Process 2016/05843-4), in which didactic materials will be produced from the interests of young people. In order to achieve the objectives of this present project we intend to use the mixed methodology linked to a sequential explanatory study, in which the first phase will be quantitative and the second qualitative (QUAN-> QUAL). In this scenario, the results are expected to contribute: to improve the quality of biodiversity teaching in secondary schools; serve as a basis for the future preparation of didactic materials within this Thematic Project, among other issues.
