Abstract

The present research will study a person who was active in the economic and republican development of the city of Santos, from the end of the 19th century until the period considered Belle Epoque. Through the biographical study of Júlio Conceição (1864 - 1938), we will try to integrate, exemplify and question through his ideas and action what the history of the sciences comprises as the process of scientific institutionalization, giving special attention to the relations between the sciences and their publics. Júlio Conceição was a coffee commissary, who was in charge of various positions in the city and in the creation of several institutions and spaces for education, sanitation, and health in the city (Pereira, 1990). According to the same author, we can understand him as a true "missionary of progress" (Pereira, 2016). Although his performance is understood in the history of education, there is no deeper relation between that and the process of scientific institutionalization in São Paulo. In this way, I will highlight the actors, spaces of circulation, practices, and attitudes of the public in the face of scientific and technological knowledge through various modernization processes in the region and in the city. The research has historiographic and documentary character and will map the actors and flows of the knowledge in the locality, making use of diverse historical collections. As a product, it is expected to publish a textbook for teacher training and extension courses and contribute to the historiography of the history of science in Brazil. (AU)
