The core issues of our CEPID relate to the biological investigation of the underlying mechanisms leading to epilepsy and stroke, as well as the mechanisms of injury and progression associated with these diseases, and are related to prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Our goals are to develop new methods and techniques to improve understanding of the mechanisms of plasticity, damage and repair in epilepsy and stroke, and to apply these results to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The primary motivation for this project came from the need to address these relevant and complex biological problems by combining the expertise of research groups with distinct and complementary backgrounds. One of the many aspects that reveals the unique complexity associated with epilepsy and stroke research is the fact that such conditions are not exclusively defined, that is, they cannot be related to a single disease or syndrome. This multiplicity of biological factors related to the etiology, symptomatology, prevention and treatment of epilepsy and stroke indicates the need for collaborative research involving different areas of expertise. In addition, this initiative provides for the creation of a new environment for scientific and technological development, new clinical applications, education and interaction with the business sector. Our proposal will be driven not only by technological advances but by robust and relevant hypothesis. Research into the development of new technologies will be driven by scientific foundations and established social needs to provide real-world relevant applications. The level of excellence of this proposal is compatible with the fact that it is clinically important, realistic and highly scientifically unique, combining genetics, neurobiology, pharmacology, neuroimaging, computer science, robotics, physics and engineering. The findings will benefit patients with epilepsy, stroke and other prevalent diseases, and contribute substantially to ongoing scientific discussions within neurology, psychiatry and cognitive neuroscience. The collaborations described in the project between CEPID proposed here and other major neuroscience centers will accelerate the advance of knowledge directly relevant to all people suffering from highly disabling neurological conditions.
