Abstract

In an attempt to obtain a common and shared understanding of the entities, circumstances, and people encountered, organizations tend to encourage actors to produce categories and labels that assist in the creation and communication of shared meanings, and in providing the foundation for stable and social interactions, giving meaning to organizational reality. Taking labeling as a fundamentally social process, I argue that research in our field tends not to detail how stereotypes and social-level stigmas affect organization-specific labels and overlook how labels for designating people are constructed in organizations. Thus, the focus of this research is to understand how people in organizational contexts produce labels that designate individuals with whom they relate. To address this question, this research is based on an ethnographic inspired research in a police organization. This research contributes to research by analysing how labels to designate people are constructed in organizations. (AU)
