Globalization, technological innovation and regional development: how do knowledge externalities produce innovation in São Paulo?

Abstract

This project aims to empirically explore the global investment dynamics of transnational corporations from the perspective of the territorial allocation of their technological innovation efforts. The project will seek, on the one hand, to describe the relationship between external knowledge economies embedded in the articulation between local innovative actors, local and regional socioeconomic structures and strategies of industrial companies, with a focus on the performance of transnational corporations. In the course of this effort, this project will also explore the recent developments in the geography of innovation in São Paulo from the perspective of knowledge spillovers among the various actors involved in the process of technological change. Based on spatial statistics models - with emphasis on spatial econometrics - this project will apply quantitative methodologies of spatial externalities to the data bases oriented to the empirical capture of local agglomerations and their patterns of economic and technological development. The project will strengthen the capacity of the state collection and analysis system in the methodological treatment of the data collected - resulting in an expansion of the analytical competencies of public agents with respect to the expected results of public policies. On the other hand, this project seeks to bring more robust empirical subsidies to local and regional development policies - especially with regard to attracting investments. (AU)
