Abstract

This project represents the continuation of the work that is already being successfully developed, the study of new and rare minerals from Brazil, to increase the current mineralogical knowledge through research including crystal structure determination and solution of mineralogical nomenclature problems. Studies regarding the relationship among these minerals and their associations (assemblages, rocks, genesis, paragenesis) will also be developed. The complete description of new minerals from Brazil, in agreement with the rules of the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) will be done, with submission of nomenclature proposals. For execution of this project, samples already collected in several Brazilian occurrences will be used, and samples obtained during new field works in Brazilian occurrences. Among the many samples already collected are those of several pegmatites from Minas Gerais, from the alkaline massif of Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, from the carbonatites of Cajati in São Paulo and Araxá in Minas Gerais. From a pegmatite in Conselheiro Pena, Minas Gerais, a new mineral was already discovered and is in study. From Poços de Caldas, where the new minerals manganoeudialyte and fluorlamprophyllite have recently been described, at least four new minerals have now been identified and are also being studied. All the five type minerals from São Paulo state were discovered in Cajati: zirkelite, quintinita, menezesita, pauloabibita and melcherita. Researches of Scientific Initiation, Master's degree, Doctorship's degree and Post-Doctorship related to the subject of this project will be implemented. (AU)
