Abstract

Malaria is a parasitic infectious disease considered a public health problem which represents danger to the most diverse people. Present in 97 countries, considered as endemic areas, this disease puts at risk 40% of the world population. Infections by Plasmodium spp. can lead to a severe respiratory condition, with pulmonary complications such as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). This syndrome is characterized by acute inflammation, alveolar endothelium and pulmonary parenchyma injuries, dysfunction and increased permeability of the pulmonary alveolar-capillary barrier and, consequently, formation of edema. Thus, in view of several existing pathogenesis-related gaps, as well as absence of biomarkers for Malaria-associated ARDS, this project aims to identify the panel of proteins in mice developing this syndrome, and also recognize them as possible biomarkers. Identification of this protein pool is crucial for early diagnosis, development of prophylactic and treatment strategies, and understanding of Malaria-associated ARDS. (AU)
