Abstract

This document is a research project submitted to FAPESP within the "Regular" funding line. The project coordinator and principal investigator is an assistant professor of the department of Aerodynamics, division of Aeronautical Engineering at ITA. The work deals with the development of reduced-order models for flow-control applications, aiming at the control of transition to turbulence in boundary layers and at the reduction of noise radiated by aerodynamic surfaces and jets; for both cases the actuation occurs by the manipulation of the flow, with the control of hydrodynamic instabilities. The development of such models requires detailed analyses of experimental or numerical databases, which, once properly processed, may provide information on the relevant structures in the flows at hand. Finally, such models will be used for the development of open- and closed-loop flow control applications, which will be tested in experiments aiming at transition delay or reduction of sound radiation by airfoils. The potential benefits due to control will be assessed, as well as the robustness of the control laws. The applications may lead to new, innovative concepts for reduction of noise emission and aerodynamic drag of aircraft. (AU)
