Abstract

This proposal is based on the possibility of producing valuable chemical compounds from one of the residues of the sugar and alcohol industry: fusel oil. This oil is composed mainly of alcohol with low water solubility, the main one being isoamyl alcohol (3-methyl-1-butanol), reaching 62% of the volume. The goal of the present research project is converting fusel oil into different higher chain alcohols, aldehydes, ethers and unsaturated aliphatic and aromatic compounds through catalytic partial dehydrogenation processes at high temperature in continuous flow at low pressure, known as Guerbet and Lebedev reactions. The feasibility of the proposed process is the availability of energy in industrial plants due to the burning of sugarcane bagasse, which generates an energy surplus that reaches the concept of biorefinery. The proposed reaction will be catalyzed by mixed-metal oxides obtained from hydrotalcites precursors (lamellar double hydroxides - LDH) calcination, which original formula is [Mg2+1-xAl3+x (OH)2]x+ CO32-x/n.mH2O, which can be selected simply and at low cost. HDLs are modified with different metal ions, replacing Mg2+ and Al3+, by Cr2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Nb5+, La3+, Ag+, Au3+ from 0.5 to 5% mol%. Taking into account the proposed structural modifications, it is possible to tune the catalysts activity controlling the amphoteric properties through the acidity of transition metal ions, the electronic properties such as reduction potential and also promote vacancy in the crystalline reticule by the introduction of ions of large ionic radius or higher valence. The catalysts and its precursors will be characterized by XRD. FTIR, TGA, BET, acidity and basicity measurements. The obtained organic products as well as the starting fusel oil will be characterized and quantified by GC/MS. (AU)
