Abstract

Access to high quality water is a necessity throughout the world. Brazil, although rich in freshwater resources, has important water security concerns, particularly in the most populated urban areas. Campinas metropolitan region in São Paulo state faces significant difficulties related to water scarcity and pollution. Good water quality is not only important for drinking water supply but also for the multiple uses of water, such as irrigation, livestock, recreation, industry and aquatic life protection. To address these problems and develop technologies applicable to other areas from Brazil and Latin America, SANASA, Campinas Water and Sanitation Company and UNICAMP, State University of Campinas - are submitting a proposal to FAPESP to support the creation of the Brazilian Water Research Center (BWRC). State University of Campinas will host this innovative water research center, which goal is to conduct advanced research to cope with the needs related to water and sewage treatment and water security. Water availability, telemetry and loss control will also be addressed. The research projects to be developed at the BWRC are expected to unfold into knowledge, products, and public policies. Therefore, our plan also comprises activities related to technology transfer, education, knowledge dissemination, and regulation. Regulatory issue is a critical long-term problem that needs to be faced to allow a fast transformation of the Brazilian reality regarding water and sanitation new technologies. Among the BWRC goals we can highlight: a) the development of strategies on water security to mitigate climatic change and lack of existing infrastructure; b) the development of innovative and more efficient filtration technologies and advanced treatments both for water and sewage aiming to offer low-cost and higher quality water for Campinas region; c) to improve water distribution, to decrease water losses and implement pilot scale telemetry for water consumption in Campinas region; d) to promote innovation, technology transfer including knowledge dissemination for the technical staff of SANASA and other water companies from Brazil as well other developing countries; and e) to act pro-actively in the formulation and implementation of regional and national public policies related to water and sewage innovative technologies implementation. The BWRC creation plan is presented as a 10-year research program and to reach our goals, we count with a team of qualified researchers and water specialists networked to national and international institutions.
