Abstract
Calcium (Ca2+) is a fundamental ion for cellular homeostasis, serving as a signaling molecule for numerous intracellular events in the neuron. At rest its concentration is around nanomolar and during neuronal activity this concentration can reach millimolar values. The rise and decay of intracellular Ca2+ occurs mainly by specific mechanisms in cell membranes. Among these mechanisms, there are ATP dependent structures for cytosolic Ca2+ removal. Intracellular ATP is generated through biochemical processes by breaking down glucose from the extracellular medium, or lactate, carried by astrocytes to neurons. In this project we intend to verify how intracellular biochemical pathways and lactate sent by astrocytes affect neuronal Ca2+ dynamics and its ATP-dependent intracellular removal mechanisms. (AU)
