Abstract

Brazil has a high potential to become a reference in the freshwater prawns production área due to idle ponds and the opportunity to use prawns in integrated systems with fish. However, the greatest obstacle in Brazil is the stable supply of quality post-larvae to increase production of the species Macrobrachium amazonicum and Macrobrachium rosenbergii. In order to efficiently produce post-larvae, it is necessary to understand the reproduction and the larviculture systems. Thus, the aims of the project are to formulate a efficient feed for freshwater prawn breeders and to evaluate the viability of the larvae. For the feasibility of the project, it was carried out a literature review of all the papers and information up to now available with freshwater prawns breeders. The data were compiled and will serve as the basis for the formulation of a cheap and nutritionally adequate feed. Meeting the nutritional requirements of the breeders guarantees the health and the best development of their larvae, since the reserves of the yolk sac come from the mother. The quality of the feed will be evaluated by the reproductive parameters of the males, such as sperm quality, motility and viability; and females as quantity and quality of eggs per female, nutritional composition of eggs, fecundity and hatchability. The results obtained will be compared with the prawns that will recieve the commercial feed (control) currently available for marine shrimps. In addition, larvae obtained from breeder fed different feed will be evaluated. The total survival, mean percentage of post-larvae, average percentage of larvae, productivity (post-larvae / larvae), wet and dry weight of post-larvae, total length, mortality rate, weight gain and rate growth. At the end it will be possible to elaborate a primary protocol for the reproduction of freshwater prawns, aiming the stable supply of quality post-larvae and reducing the production costs of these young forms. According to the results of phase 1, it will be proposed in the phase 2: (a) Definition of the requirements in vitamins and minerals of reproducers; and (b) development of a program for the selection of prawns breeders. Subsequently, for phase 3 partnerships will be developed with companies of larviculture (ex: Diamante Alimentos) and supply of feed (ex: Agromix). With this, it is expected to strengthen effectively the national production chain of freshwater prawn and eliminate the obstacles currentely faced by producers. (AU)
