Abstract

The indirect calorimetry method, using the respirometry system, is employed for metabolic measurement in poultry birds, with the aim to evaluate the energy metabolism of poultry categories (broiler chicken. Laying hens, and broiler breeders) and the feed energy utilization of different feedstuff used un poultry production. The respirometry system proposed on the thematic project n. 2019/26575-6 consists of an open-circuit of respirometry chambers (internal dimension: 90×85×95 cm), equipped with a digital environmental temperature controller. The system of respirometry consists of a mass flow kit pump (FK-100, Sable System, Las Vegas) that pulls the air by negative pressure at a ventilation flow set depending on the animal's mass allocated in the chamber from the external environment (atmospheric air) to inside of each. A sub-sampler (SS4, Sable System, Las Vegas) conduces the air sample of 160 ml/min to the RH-100 analyzer (Sable System, Las Vegas) to register the water vapor pressure. Sequentially, the sample is drier on a Drierite (CaSO4) lineal-tube and conducted to paramagnetic oxygen analyzer (PA-10, Sable System, Las Vegas) and carbon dioxide analyzer based on the infrared principle (CA-10, Sable System, Las Vegas). The respirometry system consists of a group of chambers, programmed to the intermittent sequence of data collection, where the measurement can be done on the long time period of reading (approximately by 24 hours), recording the gas exchange (O2 consumption and CO2 production) data each second and averaging by minute to heat production (HP) calculations. This system is adapted to biological trials in poultry (in groups and individually). (AU)
