Abstract

Positive electrode materials for rechargeable batteries are the focus of intense research and subject to a wide range of challenges for its uses in energy storage. The development of Li-ion batteries is restricted by electrochemical and thermodynamic limits; furthermore, the scarcity and high cost of Li-based minerals increase the production cost, alongside safety concerns and the need of enhanced life cycle, calls for inexpensive, safer and more stable rechargeable batteries. Additionally, it is a great challenge on a global scale to move towards more reliable and benign energy sources, which favours energy storage systems based on electrical energy. Hence, two possible pathways for the development of rechargeable batteries are: (i) researching new materials, positive and negative electrodes materials and electrolytes, with the aim to improve the performance, increase the capacity and stability in the next years, and (ii) designing and assessing new routes that allow the optimization and research of these new materials. This research proposal is focused on the development of new positive materials based on inexpensive mixed metal oxides to be used in Li-ion batteries for improved cyclability and safety. Special attention will be given to modify and control the morphology of these mixed oxides by new synthetic routes. (AU)
