Narrative single-session therapy: possibilities and therapeutical limits

Abstract

Considering the benefits that Narrative Single-Session Therapy (NSST) can bring in the provision of mental health care, this research aims to understand the therapeutic potentials of this type of care. Therefore, 96 consultations in NSST will be performed by psychologists specialists in this modality with adults from the general population. The consultations will be videotaped and the recordings will be analyzed based on the analysis of the process of change in psychotherapy named Innovative Moments and the use of a questionnaire to assess psychological well-being (Outcome Questionnaire 45-2) pre and post session and an session evaluation questionnaire. The correlation between types and frequency of Innovative Moments in the session, the symptoms related to the problem that led the client to seek help and the assessment of the session made by the client will be carried out using Linear Hierarchical Model and Mixed Non-Linear Models. The results will be discussed from the literature on Innovative Moments, TSU and Narrative Therapy. It is hoped that this study will allow the identification of the potential of this perspective for the narrative (re) construction of the self, culminating in the analysis of its therapeutic potential. It is understood that the investment in knowledge production in this theme will allow to think about the use of this psychological care strategy in mental health policies, especially considering the success of its use in other countries as a gateway to the health system, its accessibility, its health prevention character, its cost savings and the satisfaction of the people served. The aim is to contribute to the production of knowledge about strategies for analyzing the effectiveness of psychotherapy services, something that is still insipient in the field of TSU. (AU)
