The assisted reproduction market in Brazil: socios-cultural elements in the construction of in vitro fertilization

Abstract

The project seeks to study the assisted reproduction market, identifying elements that help to build this market, using empirical in vitro fertilization technique. Its empirical space is the city of Ribeirão Preto, considered the second reference center for assisted reproduction in the State of São Paulo. The macrosociological plan seeks to identify the sector's statistics (amounts moved, for example), map its regulations, the main services offered, identify the ways in which exchanges take place (money? Donation?) And the non-economic elements that motivate the construction of this sector. market. At the microsociological level, we will carry out an in-depth study of in vitro fertilization, with our own eggs and donated eggs, through field research at the Ribeirão Preto clinics and conversation with involved couples; in addition, we will participate in a closed Facebook group (In Vitro Fertilization: Recipients and Donors exchanging information) in which women discuss the matter. Theoretical inspiration is economic sociology, especially the discussion on altruism and the social construction of markets. (AU)
