Abstract

In the past few years, many factors, such as environmental issues, the electric market deregulation, development of new technologies, new energy policy, contribute to expanding the number of small generators connected to the distribution networks. The increase in the penetration of these small generators, known as Distributed Generation (DG), led to a reformulation of the traditional problems related to the electrical distribution systems. The DG, which mainly uses renewable energy sources (sun and wind), that together with the demand variation, insert a high level ofuncertainty in these problems. Another crucial element nowadays, which also contributes to this reformulation, is the energy storage devices (batteries), which can operate as a load or generator depending on the need of the network in which they are inserted, minimizing the impact of uncertainties system. However, many of these devices are owned by third parties, causing the distribution company to create mechanisms to manage/mitigate the impacts caused by these devices. In this sense, this research project proposes to study some of the problems related to the planning and operation of the distribution systems, such as the reconfiguration of networks, installation of capacitor banks and voltage regulators, reconditioning of lines, planning of thecontrol system, and protection considering the installation or presence of DG and batteries indistribution systems, which belong to the distribution company or to third parties. In addition to studies assessing the actions described above considering only the initiative of the distribution company, it is also proposed to carry out studies evaluating different decision-making agents, such as the owners of GD and batteries and even agents related to the energy market. Thus, thepresent research project aims to clarify existing gaps in the problems related to the planning and operation of distribution systems with DG and energy storage devices. (AU)
